Lifestyle vs Golf Shop

The phrase “lifestyle shop” has been thrown around for a while now, but what does it actually mean and why are we talking about it more and more in the golf industry?

Golf shops are no longer places where people go simply to buy a golf polo, a sleeve of golf balls, or a glove. While those products will always be an important part of our business, there is so much more opportunity within a golf shop today. Our retail operation should be an extension of the club itself. A place where members can shop, discover new brands, find gifts, and ultimately bring a little piece of the club into their everyday lives!

One of my favorite questions to get at the golf course is, “I can’t wear it on the golf course, so why do you sell it in the shop?”

And my answer is simple: because we want to be a one-stop shop for your lifestyle and not just your golf game.

Think about how many T-shirts you own. How many sweatshirts, hats, travel bags, beach towels, candles, coffee mugs, or accessories you use throughout the week? If you are proud to be a member of your club, chances are you would love to have some of those everyday items with your club’s logo on them, too.

That is where the idea of a lifestyle shop becomes so important.

We want our members to be able to walk into the golf shop looking for a gift and find something special. We want them to find their next favorite travel bag, a great pair of sunglasses, a candle for their home, a beach tote for the weekend, or a T-shirt they can throw on with jeans. We want the shop to be a place where you can find something for yourself, your spouse, your children, or a friend….whether they play golf or not.

And I think that is one of the most exciting parts of golf retail right now. The possibilities are so much bigger than golf apparel.

A successful lifestyle shop should still feel unmistakably connected to the club and to golf, but it shouldn't be limited by the golf course. It should reflect the personality, location, and membership of the club. For a club in South Florida, that might mean incorporating resort wear, beach accessories, travel pieces, home goods, and elevated casual apparel. At another club, it might mean more outdoor lifestyle, heritage goods, or cold-weather accessories.

Ultimately, we aren't just selling merchandise, we're selling a connection to the club.

When a member wears a club-branded sweatshirt to dinner, takes their club tote on vacation, gives a club-branded gift to a friend, or reaches for their favorite hat on a Saturday morning, the golf shop becomes part of their life far beyond the four hours they spend on the course.

That is what I think a true lifestyle shop should be: an extension of the club that gives members more ways to show their pride and incorporate the club they love into their everyday lives.

I am curious to see how this category of lifestyle apparel, and accessories continues to grow as the industry grows. I think it will be very interesting to see what new brands start to enter into the green grass space and make their way into golf shops. I’m excited to see how other merchandisers and golf professionals lean into the lifestyle concept. There are a lot of ways that I am taking this concept and running with it and am excited to share over the course of the upcoming golf season. Stay tuned!
